Yesterday I received in the mail a generic Lightning cable, and it works fine with my iPhone 5. It fully supports charging and USB data. It is reversible. And it was under $5.00.
There seems to be many manufacturers and sellers of these cables, so your mileage may vary.
Yes, it seems that the pundits were wrong about the "authentication chip" in the Lightning cable - but that isn't a surprise - pundits are often loose with facts.
